ARGUABLY one of the most anticipated debuts of the on-going 85th annual Geneva Motor Show is the all-new Honda Civic Type-R.
The final production-ready version bowed on the floors of Geneva last weekend. As previously reported, the new Civic Type-R sees its predecessor’s 2.0-litre high-revving naturally aspirated engine replaced with a brand new and turbocharged mill of the same displacement.
Dubbed by Honda as a “race car for the road”, the new Type-R boasts no less that 310hp and 400Nm of peak torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via sixspeed manual transmission, allowing the new hot hatch with a century sprint time of 5.7 seconds and a claimed top speed of 270km/h.
Notable features include an aggressivelooking aerokit with a large fixed rear spoiler, front splitter, rear diffuser, 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/35 R19-sized tyres tailored for the model, as well as quad tailpipes.
Underneath its metal, the new TypeR’s chassis also receives several unique performance bits starting with a pair of 350mm drilled front disc brakes with quad-piston calipers sourced from Brembo.
Complementing that is a dual axis strut suspension engineered to minimise torque-steer, paired with a H-shaped torsion beam suspension in the rear that feature a “crushed pipe” assembly for increased roll rigidity, and four point adaptive damper system.
During its debut in Geneva, Honda also revealed that the new Civic Type-R managed to beat the Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R’s laptime around the Nürburgring Nordschleife course. The Type-R now claims the title as the fastest front-wheel-drive car to lap the gruelling 20.8km-long coursewith its laptime of 7 minutes and 50.63 seconds – more than three seconds quicker than the rivalling Renault.
The new Japanese hot hatch is scheduled for market release in the UK first starting this summer, where it be priced starting from £29,995.
