JOHANNESBURG: Flooding sparked by heavy rains has killed 64 people and destroyed more than 100 buildings in Angola's western city of Lobito, the news agency Agencia Angola Press reported Friday.The death toll included 35 children, with rescue teams in the Southern African country continuing to search for more victims.
Hundreds of families have been evacuated since Wednesday, when the rains hit the region, according to the newspaper Jornal de Angola. Lobito officials said the disaster was caused in part by a practice of building homes on the sides of mountains that are prone to heavy rainwater runoff. – dpa
