MERCEDES-BENZ’S high performance arm AMG recently after introduced its new AMG-GT3 racer during the on-going 85th Geneva Motor Show.
Based on the firm’s new AMG GT coupe road car, the new GT3spec racer boasts several extensive upgrades over the road it is based upon to become a potent on-track competitor. The new racer will replace the outgoing SLS AMG GT3 race machine as well.
The most noticeable change lie in the race car’s extensive aerodynamics package, complete with splitters, large GT3 regulation-spec rear wing, and rear diffusers. Much of the body panel is made of lightweight carbon fibre whilst the front bumper, side skirts, and doors have been totally redesigned. Rounding off the aesthetic changes is the ventilated front hood that improves engine cooling.
On board, the road car’s luxurious cabin has been gutted, replaced with a more spartan atmosphere emphasised by the a new GT3-spec steel roll cage, a digital instrument panel, and a carbon fibre race seat. The cabin also boasts carbon fibre trimmings with race-spec switch gears and steering wheel.
Mercedes has not revealed the AMG-GT3’s powertrain specification, but it is believed that an upgraded version of the brand’s 6.3-litre V8 from the outgoing SLS AMG GT3 will be fitted. Sources online also speculate that the upgraded mill will be paired with an upgraded race-spec six-speed sequential gearbox as well.
The new Mercedes-Benz AMG-GT3 has already gone on sale at a still undisclosed price, with customer racing teams expected to take delivery sometime later this year.
